Advertisement for the position of MNRE-Sponsored Postdoc

The Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur invites applications for MNRE Postdoctoral Fellow positions, with appointments expected to begin in January 2026. The department welcomes outstanding candidates with expertise across all domains of sustainable energy engineering and is particularly interested in individuals with strong academic and research backgrounds in the following areas:

  • Energy transition and modeling, energy economics, field survey, and circular economy/life cycle assessment, including experience with data analytics, econometric modeling, and sustainability evaluation tools such as ArcGIS, R, Python, SPSS, SimaPro, LEAP etc.
  • Experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, with emphasis on wind tunnel testing, aerofoil design, and force and pressure measurements related to wind energy systems and offshore vertical-axis wind turbines.
  • Solar gasification and thermal systems, with hands-on experience in heat transfer, reactor design, chemical kinetics, and solar-driven biomass conversion technologies.
  • Materials science and photovoltaic technologies, including organic and perovskite solar cell fabrication, device characterization, equipment handling, and recycling of solar PV devices with an engineering perspective.
  • Fuel cell and electrolyzer systems, covering cell/device design, electrochemical characterization, numerical modeling, and performance testing for hydrogen energy applications.

Compensation & benefits:

  • Base Salary: Rs. 58000 per month
  • Dearness allowance (DA): DA is not applicable for this position as per DST norms.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): As per central government norms for Kanpur.
  • Contingency Expenses: As per MNRE norms for this position.
  • Medical Benefits: Entitled to medical facilities as per IIT Kanpur norms for this position.
  • Leave: Entitled to casual leave and earned leave/annual leave as per IIT Kanpur norms.

Project 1: Energy transition and modeling

Required Qualifications: PhD in any engineering/science/economics, or related fields.
Relevant skills & experience: Candidates with experience in Energy modeling, energy economics, field survey, or circular economy/life cycle assessment will be preferred. Knowledge of econometrics and various software tools, including ArcGIS, R, Python, SPSS, and LEAP, is desirable.

Project 2: Offshore Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

Required Qualifications: PhD in the field of experimental fluid mechanics/aerodynamics with a strong academic background.
Relevant skills & experience: Candidates with experience in wind tunnel testing, force, and pressure measurements will be preferred. Knowledge of aerofoil theory is desirable.

Project 3: Solar Gasification of Biomass

Required Qualifications: PhD in experimental fluid thermal sciences with a strong background in heat transfer and chemical kinetics.
Relevant skills & experience: Experience in solar thermal systems, reactor design and development, and gasification systems is desirable.

Project 4: Perovskite solar cell fabrication and characterization

Required Qualifications: PhD in Materials Science/Physics/Electrical Engineering or related fields.
Relevant skills & experience: Proven experience in organic or perovskite solar cell fabrication and characterization, equipment handling, or experience in recycling of solar PV devices with exposure to engineering aspects.

Project 5: Fuel cell design and testing

Required Qualifications: PhD in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
Relevant skills & experience: Proven knowledge and experience of working with fuel cells/electrolyzers, cell/device design, and testing. Knowledge of electrochemical characterization and numerical modeling is desirable.
